'Sanju' bring at least RS 230 crore to be a hit for Ranbir Kapoor
Although the 35-year-old has spoiled his stardom in recent years and the next biographical release of Rajkumar Hirani, "Sanju will be a test of fire for him."
A method actor, a prolific dancer and the blue-eyed child of every woman Ranbir Kapoor is the quintessential Bollywood star without a stable career chart. Although the industry is enamored with the aura of this Kapoor, the producers are skeptical about their choice.
The 35-year-old has spoiled his stardom in recent years and the next biographical release of Rajkumar Hirani "Sanju will be a test of fire for him.
"Sanju will make or break Ranbir Kapoor's career in Bollywood and decide if he is here to stay," said film trade analyst Atul Mohan.
According to Mohan, the film should mark a business between Rs 225 crore and Rs 230 in Kapoor at the top of the table.
"The trailers have created the much-needed hype and curiosity for the audience and we do not expect an opening on Friday with business of less than Rs25 crore-Rs30 crore, but the trend should continue during the week, word of mouth should spread and Sanju has to be in his best game until he crosses the Rs200 crore mark, "Mohan said.
Critics count on Kapoor's performance and Hirani's success rate at the box office. "The first movie of two hundred million rupees Three Idiots and the first movie of 300 million rupees PK came from Rajkumar Hirani, so we hope that Hirani will continue to give the films, make the Midas touch and make Sanju a success", Mohan added.
If Sanju manages to do it well, it will be a return for Ranbir Kapoor after half a decade. His last blow Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewaani (YJHD) in 2013 made about Rs318 crore at the box office. Post YJHD however, Kapoor's career went through a historical low. Right after his best stage with films like Barfi (2012) and Rockstar (2011), Ranbir Kapoor took films such as Besharam (2013), Bombay Velvet (2015) and Roy (2015). The last nail in the coffin was the Jagga Jasoos of 2017, which was made with a budget of Rs130 crore and could make only Rs83 million rupees at the box office in his lifetime. Whether Imtiaz Ali or Anurag Basu, no one could make Ranbir's films commercially successful. The money is in Rajkumar Hirani this time and his track record to change things.
If Sanju manages to stay afloat at the box office and earn some money, there will also be a resurrection of the Ranbir Kapoor brand. "Ranbir is a weird actor and, although no one has doubted his acting skills, he desperately needs a successful movie in his kitty to change things for him." Ranbir 2.0 will start with Sanju, according to initial assessments, Ranbir 2.0 should have a happier story to tell, "said trademark expert Harish Bijoor.
